The First World War shaped the modern Middle East, though the experience of Arab and Turkish soldiers in that conflict remain one of the least studied aspects of the war. In this lecture, Oxford historian Eugene Rogan draws on the diaries and letters of common soldiers to provide a sense of life in the Ottoman trenches – in Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, Palestine and Syria.
